SUBJECT
GM5 Erratic Shifting: Trans Light Illuminated and FC 60 (3C Hex) in TCM

MODEL
E36/7 (Z3) with M54 and GM5 from 06/00 >
E39 with M52TU and M54 and GM5 from 09/99 up to 03/01
E46, 323i (sedan/coupe/convertible/sport wagon) with M52TU and GM5 from 05/98 up to 03/00
E46, 328i (sedan/coupe) with M52TU and GM5 from 05/98 up to 06/00
E46, 325iTA (sport wagon) with M54 and GM5 from 08/00 up to 03/01
E46, xi (all wheel drive, sedan/sport wagon) with M54 and GM5 from 08/00
E53 with M54 and GM5 from 04/00

SITUATION
Customer may complain of the following:

-- Erratic / harsh shifting and the transmission light is illuminated "No start / no crank" condition Fault code 60 (3C Hex) is stored in the TCM/EGS.

CAUSE
No power to the selector switch or selector switch malfunction.

CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, check the specified fuse (listed below). If the fuse is not "blown", replace the selector switch.

PROCEDURE





1. Before beginning of this repair, check the fuses shown.

2. Replace the fuse if "blown" and diagnose/repair the cause of the "blown" fuse. FC 60 will set in the TCM if this fuse is "open". Any additional diagnostic/repair time associated with "blown" fuse, should be claimed separately.

3. If the fuse is not "blown", then replace the selector switch.

Refer to repair instruction 24 35 600 for replacement of the selector switch.

NOTE:
Any additional work performed (replacing "blown" fuse, diagnosing/repairing the root cause of defective fuse) is outside of the scope of this repair and must be addressed separately. All fault codes that are encountered should be included in the Warranty Claim Comments section.
