Program Switch & Range Selector

Program Switch & Range Selector

Through the model years there have been various configurations of the program switch. Regardless of it's appearance, the Program Switch provides a momentary ground input signal to the TCM requesting a specific shift program.

The two position switch provides:

- "A" - selection for the economy program. This program is automatically initiated at engine start up. It is recalled when "A" is selected. This program provides a shift program suitable for a normal driving style. The shift points are set to provide fuel efficiency as well as driving pleasure.

- "M" or "*" - selection for the manual or winter program.
"M" selection provides a manual shift program that engages only the gear selected. Automatic up/down shift's possible. Moving the range selector manually provides gear shifting.
"*" - selection provides a winter program providing the following gear shift possibilities based on the range selector position.

The M3 utilizes a three position switch for the addition of an "S" for the sport program.

EGS systems with the two position program switch obtain the Sport program request by pulling the range selector lever into 4,3 or 2.

With sport selected, the shift points are raised providing and aggressive shift program suited to sporty driving styles.

Program switch in "A" = selector lever in "4" = Sport Program requested and held.
