4HP 22 EH transmissions were the first electronic controlled transmissions on BMW vehicles in the US market. The 1986 model year 535i, 635i and 735i vehicles where equipped with the first version control system identified as E7. Through the lifespan of the transmission two additional control systems where phased in (late E7 and E9). The 4HP 24 transmission was introduced in 1988 with the debut of the 750iL (E32).

Identical in function to the 4HP 22, the 4HP 24 was designed to handle the higher torque output of the M70 V12 engine. Components where changed and/or modified providing the higher torque rating.
