SUBJECT
E46, E83 with GM5 - EGS FC053 Gear 3 Monitoring
MODEL
E46 (3 Series) with M54 and GM5 up to 06/05
E83 (X3) with M54 and GM5 up to 08/05
SITUATION
Transmission warning indicator light is illuminated. Fault code FC 053 (hex 35) - "Gear 3 Monitoring" is stored in EGS control module. In certain cases, other gear monitoring faults (FC 050, 052, 054, 055) may be stored as well.
Transmission slippage is not detected and trans fluid is clean (not burned or contaminated).
CAUSE
Sensitivity of EGS diagnostic software.
[NEW] CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, on the:
^ E46 vehicles, reprogram EGS transmission control module with DIS CD 42.0, or higher.
^ E83 (X3) vehicles, reprogram EGS transmission control module with CIP 19.0 with the 1st online update.
