SI B 16 05 06Fuel Supply Systems
October 2006
Technical Service
This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.M. B16 201 03 dated July 2003.
SUBJECT
"Check Filler Cap" Warning Light Not Functioning
MODEL
E46 with M54 produced 04/02 - 04/03
SITUATION
Multiple shop visits with the "Check Engine" light illuminated and evaporation faults (related to loose gas caps) stored in the DME module. The "Check Filler Cap" warning light in the instrument cluster did not illuminate, even when the gas cap was found loose.
CAUSE
Coding error in Kombi instrument cluster.
The "Check Filler Cap" feature was introduced beginning 09/2001 production on E46 vehicles in order to reduce unnecessary customer workshop visits caused by a loose gas cap after vehicle refueling.
The instrument cluster warning light ("Check Filler Cap") should be illuminated for 25 seconds immediately after starting to drive (and with road speed exceeding 5 mph), when a large evaporation leak was detected.
If the gas cap is not retightened after 3 "Check Filler Cap" warnings, then the "Service Engine Soon" warning light is illuminated.
PROCEDURE
On a customer complaint basis (with multiple visits due to evaporation faults caused by the gas cap being loose), recode Kombi instrument cluster with DIS CD V34.0, or higher. (Up to and including CD V44.0)
