SUBJECT
Service Action: Replace OBD Connector Housing

MODEL
E46 (3 Series) with option 522 (Bi-Xenon headlamps)

SITUATION

Electrical interference may result in unjustified faults being set in control units.

CAUSE

Faulty OBD connector housing.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves E46 (3 Series) vehicles with option 522 (Bi-Xenon headlamps) which were produced from February 20, 2001 to November 8, 2001.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.








The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove trim for pedal assembly (Refer to work instructions RA 51 45 185 - Removing and installing/replacing trim for pedal assembly).





2. Replace OBD housing:

^ Undo latch (1) and press out connector (2) in the direction of arrow.

^ Press the tabs (3) inwards and withdraw OBD housing from the trim.

3. Install the new OBD housing in the trim (make sure that the latch on the connector is properly closed).

4. Reinstall any removed parts.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 413. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-253) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 413 printed on the label (2) and,





c. affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
