Replacing Front Seat Belt

Removing And Installing/Replacing Front Seat Belt

CAUTION:
Observe safety regulations for handling airbag modules and pyrotechnical seat belt tensioners.
Inexpert handling can trigger off the airbag or the belt tensioner and thus cause injury.
The plug connections for the pyrotechnical seat belt tensioners are no longer marked "Orange"!

To remove and install the seat belt with belt tensioner, it is necessary to remove and install the front seat.
Place backrest in as vertical a position as possible.
Remove and install left or right front seat, 52 14 000
Remove and install front seat if pyrotechnical belt tensioner is removed and installed or replaced.
Remove and install rear panel on front seat, 52 14 198
Remove and install cover (over coupling gear) at rear.

NOTE: If a seat belt which is damaged due to an accident is exchanged, always check the retaining bracket of the belt tensioner on the seat runner for damage and replace if necessary.

A bent seatbelt tensioner retaining bracket on the seat runner may make it impossible to adjust the height of the seat!

CAUTION: If a seat belt which is damaged due to an accident is exchanged, always check the affected seat for damage.

CAUTION:
Do not detach coupling gear from flex shaft.
If a new belt system is fitted, always use a new coupling gear.
If a new coupling gear is fitted, always replace the top belt.

Removing belt tensioner:

Unlock airbag plug connection.
Disconnect plug for pyrotechnical belt tensioner (2).
Remove cable holder with cable (3).
Release screw (1) and remove pyrotechnical belt tensioner.

The work for removing belt tensioner ends here.

Removing inertia reel with flex shaft and coupling gear:

Release screw.
Remove end fitting.

Release screws (1, 2) on coupling gear and unclip cable from guides.

NOTE: Replace driver (1) after removal with a new component as damage cannot be excluded.

When removing driver (1), ensure guide (3) and lever (2) of coupling gear are not damaged.
Remove driver (1) from backrest shaft.

Unclip flex shaft (3) from guides (1, 2).
To remove flex shaft, if necessary open retainers on seat cover.

Release nut on inertia reel and remove inertia reel with flex shaft and coupling gear.

The work for removing inertia reel with flex shaft and coupling gear ends here.

Removing belt guide:

NOTE: Protect belt guide against damage (scratches).

NOTE:
Trims of belt guide at front and rear (1) are destroyed when removed!
Remove trims of belt guide at front and rear (1).

Release screw of belt guide.

Release screw of belt guide and detach belt guide.
Remove complete seat belt with belt guide, inertia reel with flex shaft and coupling gear.
Do not kink flex shaft and do not transport inertia reel by flex shaft.

The work for removing belt guide ends here.

Installing belt guide:

NOTE: Protect belt guide against damage (scratches).

Protective cap should only be removed shortly before belt guide trims are filled.

Install belt guide, insert screws at front and rear and tighten down.

Remove protective cap from belt guide.
Install trims of belt guide at front and rear.
Make sure trims are completely clipped into place.
Pay particular attention to joint between both trims here.
Grinding noises during belt operation will ensue if trims are not completely clipped into place!

The work for installing belt guide ends here.

Installing inertia reel with flex shaft:

Installation Note:
Do not kink flex shaft and do not transport inertia reel by flex shaft.
Protect visible surface of belt guide against damage.
Place backrest in as vertical a position as possible.

Make sure groove and pin are correctly positioned.
Grip while clipping into place.
Clip flex shaft (1) with coupling gear (2).

Press down flex shaft in catch.
Ensure shaft engages properly. This can be done e.g. by pulling gently on flex shaft. Flex shaft must not clip out in the process!

Install inertia reel.

Installation Note: Coding of inertia reel (lug) must run into opening in backrest.

Secure inertia reel with nut.

Tighten down nut on inertia reel.
Tightening Torque: 39 Nm

Do not fit new driver (1) on backrest shaft yet.
Checking correct installation position of driver (1):
Backrest must be in as vertical a position as possible.
Correct installation position:
Driver (1) is positioned with lug at an angle upwards and lug points in direction of travel (arrow).

Feed driver (1) into slot (3) in lever (2) of coupling gear.

Align lever (2 on coupling gear so that slot (3) is correctly positioned with respect to driver (1).

Install driver with coupling gear on seat.
Pin on coupling gear must reach into hole on seat.
Fit driver on backrest shaft and clip into place.
Make sure driver is clipped correctly into place.

Secure coupling gear with screws (1, 2) and clip in cable.
Tightening torque for screw: 2.5 Nm

Clip flex shaft (3) into guides (1, 2).
After installing flex shaft, close seat cover retainer again if necessary.

Installation Note:
Plastic washer on end fitting must be fitted!
Coding of end fitting (lug) must run into hole on seat.
Install end fitting.

Replace microencapsulated screw.
Install screw and tighten down.
Tightening torque: 45 Nm

The work for installing inertia reel with flex shaft ends here.

Installing belt tensioner:

Installation Note: Turning lock of belt tensioner (bore hole) (1) must reach into pin (3). Retaining screw of belt tensioner is inserted in bore hole (2).

Installation Note: Pin of tensioner must snap into place in hole of cable holder.

Install belt tensioner.

Installation
Replace microencapsulated screw.
Tightening torque for screw (1), 31 Nm

Attach plug for belt lock tensioner (2), refer to Unlocking/locking airbag plug connections.
Plug of pyrotechnical belt tensioner must not be under strain.
Make sure cable holder is correctly engaged.

The work for installing belt tensioner ends here.

Checking/replacing retaining bracket of pyrotechnical belt tensioner:

Check retaining bracket (1) of pyrotechnical belt tensioner on seat runner for damage (bending), replace if necessary.
