Passenger Air Bag Cover Not Even with Dashboard

SITUATION
Some E39 owners may complain that the left forward corner of the passenger airbag cover protrudes slightly above the dash.
CAUSE
This is caused by a variation in tolerance between the cover and the dash.
CORRECTION
On a complaint basis only, remove the cover and install a piece of felt tape on the underside of the retaining lip on the dash in the left corner. This will push down on the tab of the cover when installed, pulling it down toward the level of the dash. If necessary, the tape may be layered to pull the cover down far enough.
Use a narrow (5-7 mm) piece of tape so that it does not force the cover out of position in the opening. Use BMW part number 65 77 1 377 052 or similar.
Reinstall the cover starting in the area where the tape was added so as to not push the tape out of position.
If necessary, the vertical position can be adjusted by using tape on the indicated protrusion on the left side of the opening.
