31 21 509 Checking left or right wheel hub for runout

Special tools required:
^ 00 2 480
^ 00 2 481
^ 00 2 482
^ 00 2 483
^ 00 2 484
^ 00 2 510

Important:
This procedure is only to be used and permitted on vehicles with the finding "Steering wheel torsional vibration"!
Always check both left and right hubs.

Remove wheel.
Remove brake caliper and tie up (brake lines remain connected).
Remove brake disk.
Clean contact surface (1) of wheel bearing flange.

Use special tool 00 2 480 consisting of 00 2 481 /00 2 482 / 00 2 483 /00 2 484 and 00 2 510.
Secure clamping foot 00 2 481 to spring strut.

Position dial gauge 00 2 510 under slight pretension on contact surface of wheel bearing flange.
Measure axial runout of wheel bearing flange at largest possible diameter of contact surface.
Gap A = 3 to 4 mm

Important:
Do not measure too close to connection holes of brake disk. This would distort the measurement!

Turn wheel hub slowly and read off axial runout.
Permitted flange axial runout exceeded:
^ Replace wheel hub.
^ Repeat measurement with new wheel hub.
^ Replace brake disks.
^ Replace pads.
Flange axial runout in tolerance range:
^ Replace brake disk.
^ Replace pads.
