This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 12 03 03 dated October 2003.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Reprogram DME for "Low Oil Level" Indicator

MODEL
B85, Z4 from start of production up to 11/22/2002

SITUATION
Updated DME control module programming is available. The programming, as originally installed, could cause a yellow "low oil level" indicator light fail to illuminate when the engine oil quantity drops below the specified minimum of 5.2 liters.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves B85 (Z4) vehicles which were produced from start of the series up to November 22nd, 2002.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.





The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION
Reprogram DME control module using DIS/GT1 loaded with CD32.0 or higher and CIP 6.0 or higher.

PROCEDURE

To reprogram DMB control module:

1. Connect vehicle to BMW approved battery charger.

2. Connect DISplus/GT1 loaded with CD32.0 (or higher) and CIP 6.0 or higher.

3. Select: BMW Coding/Programming

4. Select: 8 E65/E66/E85/RR1

5. Select: E85

6. Select: Load Software

7. Answer: NO to the question: Has the control module been replaced?

8. Select: DME

9. Select: Program and then: Update Software submenu. The measure plan will be determined and then displayed (e.g. for M54 2.5 engine "the old programmed part number 7 529 359; the new programmed part number 7 530 731").

Attention:

In some isolated cases, the measure plan will not be generated automatically. Message: "Determine and enter 7-digit part number of fitted control module DME will be displayed.

When using CIP 9.2, enter: 7536818 programmed DME number for Z4 2.5), or 7536820 (programmed DMB number for Z4 3.0).

Next, the message: "Determine and enter 7-digit part number of fitted control module DME basic control module" will be displayed.

When using CIP 9.2 enter [NEW] 7527072 (basic DME number for both Z4 2.5 and Z4 3.0).

10. Follow the next steps of the programming process.

11. Select: Accept and then: Start. Programming takes approximately 5 minutes.

12. Afier programming is completed, the final report is displayed. Print the final report for your records.

13. Clear faults codes stored in the various control modules (DME, EGS, DSC) during the programming process.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 349. Afier the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-205) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1),

b. punch out code number 349 printed on the label

and,





c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.





WARRANTY INFORMATION
Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via Campaign Entry
