SUBJECT
Airbag Warning Light On, SBSL FC986B or SBSR FC98EB Stored
MODEL
E85 (Z4) Vehicles produced up to December 10, 2002
SITUATION
The airbag warning light is on, and ignition circuit resistance faults are set in the "B" pillar satellite sensors - fault code 986B for SBSL and 98BB for SBSR. The faults may be set individually, or together.
Also fault code 20 is stored in the Instrument Cluster.
CAUSE
Door harness terminals damaged during the vehicle assembly process.
CORRECTION
Replace the appropriate door harness and delete all fault memories
[NEW] PROCEDURE
The new replacement harness is different in length and routing and the following points should be observed upon installation.
Note:
The replacement harness is supplied with a special grease pre-applied to the terminals. Do not apply Stabilant 22A.
^ The illustration to the left shows the routing of the new harness.
^ Note the routing of the longer fiber optic cable and install according to diagram as indicated by the arrows.
^ After the vapor barrier is installed the fiber optic cable (1) is routed through the vapor barrier towards the satellite sensor.
^ Secure the cable to the vapor barrier with appropriate tape.
[NEW] PRODUCTION VEHICLES ALREADY FITTED WITH NEW HARNESS
^ On later production vehicles (Vehicles produced from December 10, 2002 that are not affected by this Service Information) the new harness with the longer fiber optic cable is already installed.
^ The fiber optic cable is secured to the door panel via 3 clips.
^ When removing the door panel, care should be taken to disconnect this cable from the door panel from it'S 3 attachment clips as indicated in diagram on the left.
