Operation of Convertible Top Compartment Lid

The convertible top compartment lid is locked and unlocked by the central body electronics control module (ZKE) both for the manual convertible top (basic version) as well as for the automatic convertible top (optional equipment).

In the case of the automatic convertible top, the convertible top compartment lid is additionally opened and closed by a hydraulic cylinder. The convertible top compartment of the manual convertible top must be opened by hand after being released.

Operation and function

Automatic convertible top
The convertible top compartment lid is unlocked when the central body electronics control module (ZKE) receives the "unlock convertible top compartment lid" instruction from the convertible top module via the K-bus. The convertible top compartment lid is locked on receiving the "lock convertible top compartment lid" instruction.

Manual convertible top
The convertible top is unlocked by pressing the "unlock convertible top compartment" button in the switching center of the center console. The signal is routed via a line to the central body electronics control module (ZKE).

The closing and locking procedure is triggered by closing the convertible top compartment lid and lightly pressing the lid into one of the locks (left or right). A switch (Hall sensor) is integrated in each of the locks. The switch recognizes when the catch is engaged in the convertible top lock and signals this status to the control module. Consequently the central body electronics control module activates the drive for the convertible top compartment lid.

The convertible top is pulled closed if it works loose while driving (speed > 4 km/h) to such an extent that one of the switches is activated.

Convertible top compartment floor
A switch is provided in the switching center of the center console for releasing the convertible top compartment lid for the manual convertible top. The switch for determining the position of the convertible top compartment floor is also located in the switching center.

It is not possible to unlock the convertible top compartment lid if the floor is not lowered. The green LED in the button in the switching center lights when the button is pressed. In this way it signals to the user that the floor of the convertible top compartment needs to be lowered.

Preconditions
Preconditions for unlocking the convertible top compartment lid:
- Vehicle stationary

Unlocking convertible top compartment lid
The arrester hooks in the locks of the convertible top compartment lid are released and engaged by means of bowden cable assemblies. The cable assemblies are connected to the reversal mechanism of the drive. The drive is activated by the body electronics control module via a relay.

The electric motor rotates clockwise only. The central body electronics control module recognizes the position of the drive by means of a position switch on the motor (Hall sensor). The mechanism is in the "convertible top compartment lid lock" position at 0 degree (or 360 degree) and in the "convertible top compartment lid unlocked" position at 180 degree. The control module switches of the drive with a delay of approx. 100 ms when a position change is detected.

In the event of the position sensor failing, the central body electronics control module switches off the drive after approx. 5 seconds.

Emergency operation
A mechanical emergency operation facility is provided in the event of the electrical functions of the convertible top operating system failing. In this case, it is necessary to turn the convertible top compartment lid motor by hand with the aid of an Allen key.
