SUBJECT
[NEW] Service Action: Coding the IHKA

MODEL
[NEW] E46 (3 Series) from June 24, 2005 to July 13, 2005

[NEW] SITUATION
Certain vehicles were shipped from the factory with the IHKA (Automatic Heating and Air Conditioning) not coded correctly. This causes the IHKA not to function. This Service Action recodes the IHKA.

[NEW] AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E46 3 Series vehicles which were produced from June 24, 2005 to July 13, 2005.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System).
Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

[NEW] PROCEDURE
1. Press the Air Conditioning button (Snowflake) and observe if the LED lights up.
2. If the LED lights up, then proceed no further.
3. If the LED does not light up proceed with the next step.
4. Using the GT1, or DISPlus DIS CD 42 or later (without CIP installed), select Coding/programming".
5. Select "3 ZCS/FA Coding".
6. Select "E46 Series".
7. Select "1 Recoding".
8. Select "IHKA" and finish the coding procedure.
9. Recheck the operation of the air conditioning system.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number
444. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected
if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-278) and:

a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. punch out code number 444 (2) printed on the label and,

c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

[NEW] WARRANTY INFORMATION
Reimbursement for this Service Action will be via Campaign Entry.
