Exhaust System - Leaks Near The Turbocharger

SUBJECT
N54 Exhaust Leak

MODEL
All with N54 engine

SITUATION
The customer complains of a whistling or bearing noise coming from the engine.

CAUSE
The noise is caused by an exhaust leak in the area between the turbocharger and catalytic converter.

CORRECTION
On a customer complaint basis only, inspect the gasket ring located between the front pipe of the catalytic converter and the turbocharger.





Use an appropriate HC leak detector or an approved smoke machine (preferably VACUTEC(R)) to isolate the leak (noise) in the front pipe flange connection (number 1 in the illustration). If found defective, replace the gasket ring following Repair Instruction RA 18 32 050.
