23 00 613 - Removing and installing transmission (GS7S47BG SMG)

Special tools required:
- 00 2 030 00 2 030 Universal Hydro-Lifter Basic Unit
- 21 2 240 21 2 240 Grease Scraper Ring
- 23 0 131 23 0 130 Take-Up Support for Transmission
- 23 0 132 23 0 130 Take-Up Support for Transmission
- 23 0 139 23 0 130 Take-Up Support for Transmission

Important!
After completing work:

- Carry out adaptation with DIS Tester: refer to Service Function in DIS Tester.
- Teach in clutch valve characteristic value
- Adapt SMG gearbox completely
- Teach in clutch slipping point
- Check transmission oil level Service and Repair.
Use only the approved transmission fluid.
- Read out fault memory and clear entered faults.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the manual transmission.

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove complete exhaust system Service and Repair.
- Remove centre underbody protection.
- Remove reinforcement plate Service and Repair.
Important notes on installation are described in this work step.

Remove heat shields (1) and (2).

Remove propeller shaft Removing and Installing Complete Propeller Shaft (Constant-Velocity Joint).

Unscrew nuts (1).

Disconnect plugs (2) and unclip from holder.

Unlock plug (1) on pulse generator and disconnect.

Release screw (3) and remove pulse generator.

Unlock plug (2) on oxygen sensor cable and disconnect.

Release screw (1) and remove holder.

Release 6 bolts (1) prior to supporting transmission with transmission jack.

Tightening torque 23 00 1AZ Transmission in General.

Support transmission with special tools 00 2 030 00 2 030 Universal Hydro-Lifter Basic Unit, 23 0 132 23 0 130 Take-Up Support for Transmission, 23 0 131 23 0 130 Take-Up Support for Transmission and 23 0 139 23 0 130 Take-Up Support for Transmission.

Release screws (1) and nuts (2) and remove cross-member.

Tightening torque 22 32 3AZ/4AZ 22 32 Transmission Mounts.

Lower transmission.

Unlock plug (1) and remove.

Unclip plug (1) from holder, unlock and disconnect.

Unlock connector (2) and remove.

Installation Note:
Check pins of plugs (1) and (2) for damage, reset pin if necessary.

Detach plug (1) from hydraulic pump.

Lay wiring harness to one side.

Release remaining 6 bolts (1).

Tightening torque 23 00 1AZ Transmission in General.

Note:
Bolt (2) must not be released.

Bolt (2) serves to secure the starter motor.

Important!
Do not allow the transmission to hang off from the transmission input shaft as this will deform the clutch plate. Pull out transmission towards rear and remove.

Installation Note:
Check that adapter sleeves (1) are correctly seated.

Replace damaged dowel sleeves.

Installation:
Check lubrication of transmission input shaft for sticky consistency. If grease is sticky, replace clutch plate 7 Speed.

Check clutch plate for friction rust in taper splines and replace 7 Speed if necessary.

Remove any grease and lining abrasion from taper splines of clutch plate by mechanical means (with a cloth).

Installation Note:
Greasing specification:

- Remove and clean release bearing and release lever 7 Speed.
- Push on grease scraper ring 21 2 240 21 2 240 Grease Scraper Ring as far as it will go.
- Grease teeth (1) of input shaft.
Refer to BMW Service Operating Fluids.
- Detach grease scraper ring.
