Campaign - Clutch Fork Lever Inspection
SI B21 01 07Clutch
May 2007
Technical Service
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES PRIOR TO VEHICLE DELIVERY, OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT
Service Action: Clutch Fork Lever Inspection
MODEL
E85 Z4 Roadster; E86 Z4 Coupe produced from 02/28/07 up to 03/08/07
SITUATION
An incorrect clutch fork lever may have been installed during vehicle assembly. This may cause an incomplete clutch engagement during vehicle operation.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E85 Z4 Roadster/M Roadster vehicles with N52K/S54 engines, and E86 Z4 Coupe/ M Coupe vehicles with N52K/S54 engines which were produced from 02/28/2007 up to 03/08/2007.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
1. Remove clutch slave cylinder following RA 21 52 510.
2. Using a depth gauge, measure a distance between the clutch support surface near the studs (1) and the lowest contact point in the clutch fork lever (refer to the next illustration).
The lowest contact point between the clutch fork lever and the slave cylinder piston socket (1).
3. If the measured distance is MORE then 64 mm , the correct clutch fork release lever was installed. No further action is required. Reassemble all previously removed components. Use two new M8 self-locking hex nuts (P/N 07 12 9 904 877) for slave cylinder.
4. If the measured distance is LESS then 64 mm , the incorrect clutch fork release lever was installed. In this event, replace the clutch fork release lever and inspect clutch assembly for the signs of overheating. For clutch fork lever replacement procedure refer to RA 21 51 500.
Important:
Incorrect clutch release fork lever may cause clutch slippage and consecutive thermal overload. When there is evidence of overheating (discoloration of pressure plate surface, excessive wear of the friction material of clutch disc), then the clutch kit assembly has to be replaced as well.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 494. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-320) and:
a. emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 494 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
