Torque Tube Input Flange Runout Measurement

Torque Tube Input Flange Runout Measurement

Tools Required

J 7872 Magnetic Base Dial Indicator Set, or equivalent

The torque tube input flange radial runout must be measured on the machined surface of the propeller shaft rear constant velocity (CV) joint housing, as close to the flange as possible.

1. Place the transmission in NEUTRAL.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
3. Clean the surface of the propeller shaft rear CV joint housing just ahead of the torque tube input flange.
4. Mount a dial indicator set, J 7872 , or equivalent, and position the dial indicator to contact the propeller shaft rear CV joint housing as close to the torque tube input flange as possible.
5. Rotate the torque tube input flange by hand to locate the low spot.
6. Set the dial indicator to zero on the low spot.
7. Rotate the torque tube input flange by hand and record the amount of radial runout.
8. Compare the runout of the torque tube input flange to the following specification:

Torque tube input flange maximum allowable runout 0.15 mm (0.006 in).

9. If the torque tube input flange runout exceeds the specification, the torque tube requires replacement.
