Transmission Description

The Turbo Hydra-Matic 250, 250C, 350 and 350C transmissions, see images, are fully automatic three speed transmissions consisting of a three element torque converter and two planetary gear sets. The 250C and 350C also include a Torque Converter Clutch (TCC). The TCC is splined to the turbine assembly, and when operated, applies against the converter cover, providing a mechanical direct drive coupling of the engine to the transmission planetary gears. When the converter clutch is released the assembly operates as a normal torque converter.

The TCC apply and release is controlled by the position of the converter clutch apply valve located in the auxiliary valve body. The apply valve is controlled by a solenoid.

The Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 and 350C transmissions have four multiple-disc clutches, two roller clutches and a band to provide the required friction elements to obtain the desired function of the two planetary gear sets. The Turbo Hydra-Matic 250 and 250C transmissions use an adjustable intermediate band in place of the intermediate clutch, found in the Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 and 350C. Also, the Turbo Hydra-Matic 250 and 250C have three multiple-disc clutches and one roller clutch.
