Drive Range-3RD Gear

In this range, the converter clutch is applied, the overdrive roller clutch is holding, the forward clutch is applied, the direct clutch is applied, the intermediate band is released and the transmission is in Drive (D) range-third gear.

The converter clutch may not be applied on some models due to different shift calibrations and solenoid operation.

As both vehicle speed and governor pressure increase, the force of governor oil acting on the 2-3 shift valve overcomes that of the 2-3 T.V. spring and M.T.V. up oil. This permits the 2-3 shift valve to open and allows RND4D3 oil to enter the 3rd clutch passage. This oil is called the 3rd clutch oil.

3rd clutch oil then flows past the 3-2 exhaust check ball and to the 3rd/reverse check ball, seating it in the reverse passage. The 3rd clutch oil continues to the inner area of the direct clutch piston and applies the direct clutch. At the same time, 3rd clutch oil is also directed past the 3rd clutch accumulator and check ball, seating the 3rd accumulator exhaust pellet and spring. Continuing to the release side of the intermediate servo, it acts with the servo cushion spring to move the servo piston against 2nd oil, which acts as an accumulator for a smooth intermediate band release and direct clutch apply.

Third clutch oil then flows through the 3- 2 control valve and to the 3rd clutch accumulator passage.
