Forward Clutch Housing

Inspection

1. Inspect oil seals on input shaft for damage and free fit in grooves. Do not remove unless replacement is required.

2. Remove and inspect forward clutch to direct clutch thrust washer for damage.

3. Position forward clutch with input shaft down, then remove snap ring and inspect for damage.

4. Remove backing plate from forward clutch housing, then remove clutch plates from forward housing and keep them separated from the direct clutch plates.

5. Inspect composition-faced and steel clutch plates for signs of wear or burning.

6. Inspect backing plates for scratches or damage.

7. Using tools J-25018, J-23456 and J23327-1, compress retainer and spring assembly and remove snap ring. An arbor press can be used in place of tool J-23456, used along with the other tools.

8. Remove tools, then remove retainer and spring assembly from housing.

9. Inspect release spring retainer for distortion and inspect release springs for a collapsed condition.

10. Remove forward clutch piston, then remove forward clutch outer and inner piston seals and discard. Do not remove clutch apply-ring from piston unless piston or apply-ring requires replacement.

11. Inspect forward clutch piston and clutch apply-ring assembly for cracks or damage

12. Inspect forward clutch housing for cracks or other damage. Make sure oil passages are not obstructed.

13. Inspect check ball for free operation. Inspect check ball capsule or damage.

14. Inspect forward clutch housing snap ring groove for damage or burrs.

15. Inspect input shaft for open oil passages at both ends of shaft, and inspect journals for damage.

16. Inspect cup plug for damage. If cup plug is damage, grind down a No. 3 easy out to fit and remove cup plug. Install new cup plug to .039 inch below surface.

Assembly & Installation

1. Install clutch apply-ring on piston, then install outer and inner seals on piston with lip facing away from apply ring side. Use care when installing clutch piston past large forward clutch snap ring groove, as groove could damage outer seal on piston.

2. Lubricate seals and install forward clutch piston. To aid piston installation, insert fabricated tool, see image, between inner seal and shaft, then rotate tool around shaft to compress lip of seal while pushing down slightly on piston. Use same procedure between outer seal and housing.

3. Install retainer and spring assembly. Retainer could locate itself in snap ring groove. Forcing the retainer to compress the springs while in this groove could damage retainer plate.

4. Using tools J-23327-1, J-23456 and J-2518, compress retainer past snap ring groove and install snap ring. An arbor press can be used in place of tool J-23456, used along with the other tools.

5. Remove tools, then lubricate and install forward clutch plates into the forward clutch housing, starting with a waved steel plate and alternating with composition-faced and flat steel clutch plates. Refer to Clutch Plate Usage Chart, see image, for correct number of plates.

6. Install clutch backing plate with chamfered side up then install snap ring. Make sure composition clutch plates turn freely.

7. Install forward to direct clutch thrust washer and retain with petroleum jelly.

8. If removed, install input shaft seal rings, making sure cut ends are assembled in same relationship as cut, see image, and rings are seated in their groove and retained with petroleum jelly.
