Lo & Reverse Clutch Housing
Disassembly1. Compress lo and reverse clutch spring retainer, then remove snap ring and retainer and inspect for damage or distortion.
2. Remove waved spring and lo and reverse clutch piston.
3. Remove outer and inner piston seals.
4. Remove clutch apply ring.
Inspection
1. Inspect lo and reverse clutch housing for damage, or plugged feed hole.
2. Inspect lo and reverse clutch splines and snap ring groove for damage or burrs. Remove any burrs on splines or snap ring groove.
3. Inspect lo and reverse clutch piston and clutch apply ring for distortion, cracks or damage.
4. Inspect lo and reverse clutch spring retainer and waved spring for damage.
Assembly
1. Install clutch apply ring on lo and reverse clutch piston.
2. Install inner and outer seals on piston with lips facing away from clutch apply ring side.
3. Install seal protection J-25011. Apply transmission fluid to all clutch seals before reassembly.
4. Using a flat edged small screwdriver, install lo and reverse clutch piston, while rotating and pushing down into place. Flat screwdriver surface must be smooth to avoid damaging outer seal.
5. Remove seal protector, then install waved release spring.
6. Install retainer with cupped side down, then compress retainer and install snap ring.
Installation
1. Install lo and reverse clutch housing assembly aligning reverse clutch housing feed hole to reverse clutch case feed passage, using tool J-28542, see image. If lo and reverse clutch housing does not seat past the case snap ring groove, proceed as follows:
a. Remove tool J-28542.
b. Using reaction sun gear and input drum as a tool, install input drum and reaction sun gear in case.
c. Rotate reaction sun gear back and forth, tapping lightly with input drum to align roller clutch race and lo and reverse clutch hub splines.
d. Remove input drum and reaction sun gear.
e. Repeat above steps if lo and reverse clutch housing is not fully seated past case snap ring.
2. Install lo and reverse clutch housing to case snap ring with flat side against housing and beveled side up, see first image. It may be necessary to loosen adjusting screw on tool J-26958 on output shaft to install snap ring, see second image.
