External Components

1. Remove torque converter and drain transaxle by turning right axle end downward.





3. On models less internal transaxle speed sensor, remove speedometer driven gear and sleeve, governor cover, cover to speedometer drive gear thrust washer and speedometer drive gear assembly, see image.





4. On models with internal transaxle speed sensor, remove screws, speed sensor housing and oil seal, then the thrust bearing, speed sensor rotor and governor assembly, see image.

5. On all models, turn transaxle oil pan side upward, then remove oil pan and strainer, then the O-ring or seal.





6. Remove reverse oil pipe retaining brackets, intermediate servo cover and gasket, then remove intermediate servo, see image.

7. Check for proper intermediate band apply pin length as follows:

a. Install Tool J-28535, intermediate band apply pin gage. Secure with two servo cover screws.

b. Remove band apply pin from intermediate servo.

c. Install Tool J-28535-4 onto band apply pin.

d. Install Tool J-28535-4 and band apply pin into gage.





e. Apply 100 in. lbs. torque to compress the band, see image.

f. If any part of the white line shows in the window, the apply pin is the correct length. If not, change the band apply pin and recheck.

Intermediate band apply pin chart length identification:

Short-2 Grooves

Medium-1 Groove

Long-No Groove





8. Remove 3rd accumulator check valve, see image. Some early production transaxles were equipped with a cup plug to retain the 3rd accumulator check valve.

9. If it is necessary to remove the 3rd accumulator check valve on a transaxle equipped with a cup plug, proceed as follows:

a. Cut 1/4 inch off a 6 Easyout and remove the 3rd accumulator cup plug.

b. Remove the 3rd accumulator check valve from bore.





10. Remove Lo and Reverse oil pipe, seal back-up ring and O-ring seal, see image.

11. Remove Lo and Reverse seal assembly as follows:

a. Grind 3/4 inch from end of a 4 Easyout.





b. Remove and discard seal using 4 Easyout, see image.

12. Remove the dipstick stop and parking lock bracket.





13. Turn final drive unit until the C-ring is visible. Position ring with the open side facing the access window, then using Tool J34757, push the ring partially off output shaft, see image. lowly turn output shaft until the C-ring is up, then remove C-ring using a needle nose pliers and remove output shaft.
