125 Automatic Transaxle

1. Install forward clutch input shaft through hole in workbench.





2. Remove clutch pack snap ring, backing plate, then composition and steel clutch plates, see image.

3. Compress spring pack using tools J25018-A, J-23327 and J-23456 and remove snap ring. Remove the tools.

4. Remove spring retainer, spring assembly and forward piston. Remove piston seals and check for nicks.

5. Check forward clutch housing for cracks, broken welds, damaged check ball capsule and for free operation of check ball. If check ball capsule is damaged, proceed as follows:

a. Position forward clutch housing on bench with clutch side facing downwards.

b. Drive out capsule using a 9.5 mm (3/8 inch) diameter drift

c. To install new capsule, position input shaft through hole in bench and install new capsule into housing from forward clutch side using the 9.5 mm (3/8 inch) drift to set the capsule.

6. Check input shaft splines and journals for wear or damage. Check input shaft sleeve for damage. The sleeve must not turn and the slot in the sleeve should be aligned with hole in input shaft





7. Check input shaft Teflon seal rings for damage. Install new seal rings making sure cut ends are installed the way they are cut, see image.

8. Check forward clutch piston and apply ring for cracks or other damage. Apply ring width should be 11.96 mm (.470 inch). Install inner and outer seal rings onto piston with the lips facing away from the apply ring.





9. Install apply ring onto piston, lubricate oil seals, then install piston using tool around inner seal first, then outer seal, see image. Be certain not to catch the oil seal on the large forward clutch snap ring groove during installation.





10. Check spring guide, spring retainer and spring assembly. Install return spring assembly, see image.

11. Compress the retainer spring assembly and install snap ring.





12. Check backing plate, composition and steel clutch plates for wear or damage. Lubricate composition plates with automatic transmission fluid. Install clutch plates starting with a waved steel plate, then a composition plate, alternating until proper number of composition plates and flat steel plates are installed, see image. If installing new composition clutch plates, soak them in automatic transmission fluid for 15 minutes before installation.

13. Install steel backing plate and snap ring.

14. If removed, install new input shaft seal rings, see image above step 7.

15. Check driven sprocket to input shaft selective snap ring for damage or wear. Do not remove selective snap ring unless replacing.
