Ignition Timing: Adjustments

(VINS K & M)

An averaging method is used to check ignition timing for this engine. The averaging method is a process in which the timing of each cylinder can be brought into closer agreement with the base timing specification.
Set timing under the following conditions:
Normal operating temperature
Air cleaner installed
A/C off
Engine cooling fan off
Transaxle in neutral

1. Connect timing light to Number 1 spark plug wire and ground ALDL diagnostic terminal (A to B). The Service Engine Soon light will flash.
2. Record position of timing mark.
3. Connect timing light to number 4 spark plug wire and record timing.
4. Add total of two readings and divide by 2. This is the average timing.
5. If adjustment is necessary subtract the average timing from the specification. This is the amount the timing will need to be changed. Reconnect timing light to number 1 and adjust timing.
6. Remove jumper from ALDL connector and clear ECM memory by removing battery pigtail from ECM harness connector for 10 seconds.

(VIN 1)

These engines use a DISTRIBUTORLESS DIRECT IGNITION SYSTEM. The ECM controls ignition timing and no provision for adjustment is provided.
