CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION:

The ECM monitors the status of the brake switch circuits thru ECM terminal "1C4/BC4."

Code E038 will set if:

^ No Code 24 is present.
^ Vehicle speed has been above 35.0 mph and back to 0 mph several times.
^ Status of CKT 420 has not changed state from "high" to "low."

TEST DESCRIPTION: Numbers below refer to circled numbers on the diagnostic chart.

1. This step checks for B+ available for CKT 420.

2. Checks fuse, switch, and circuit for B+.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS:

A code E026, E038, in combination with a code E039 would mean a problem with one or more of the following components. Fuse, CKT 139, brake switch or wire before the splice. A single code E038 is the result of a wire or CKT 420 problem between the splice and the ECM, poor connection to ECM connector, or possibly the ECM.
