Timing Cover: Service and Repair

On all engines the cover oil seal may be replaced without taking off the timing gear cover. After removing the vibration damper, pry out the old seal with a screwdriver. Install the new seal with the lip or open end toward inside of cover and drive it into position.
1. On models equipped with airbag, disable airbag system as described under BODY ELECTRICAL SAFETY AND ENTERTAINMENT/PASSIVE RESTRAINTS, AIR BAG/MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. On all models, disconnect battery ground cable and drain cooling system, then remove vibration damper and water pump.
3. Remove oil pan and gasket as outlined.
4. Remove timing cover retaining screws and the timing cover.
5. Reverse procedure to install.
6. Rearm airbag system as described under BODY ELECTRICAL SAFETY AND ENTERTAINMENT/PASSIVE RESTRAINTS, AIR BAG/MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
