Thermostatic Air Cleaner: Testing and Inspection

Air Cleaner:

Thermac Operation:

INCORRECT THERMAC OPERATION:

1. Hesitation during engine warm up may be caused by:
a. Heat stove tube disconnected.
b. Missing or damaged air cleaner to TBI seal.
c. Damper door does not close.
d. Loose air cleaner cover or air cleaner housing.

2. Lack of power, or sluggish on a hot engine may be caused by:
a. The damper door may not be opening to outside air.

THERMAC AIR CLEANER FUNCTIONAL CHECK

1. Remove the air cleaner housing and allow the assembly to cool below 40~F (4~C). The damper door should be closed to outside air (cool air) at this temperature.
2. Check for the presence and condition of air cleaner to throttle body gasket seal.
3. Reinstall the air cleaner housing, and be sure that the heat stove is connected to the air cleaner snorkel and exhaust manifold.
4. Start the engine, and watch the damper door in air cleaner snorkel. As the air cleaner (wax pellet) warms up, the damper door should open slowly to outside air.
5. If the air cleaner actuator fails to operate as previously described, be sure that the calibrated spring is installed properly and the damper door is not binding.
