Ignition Lock Cylinder & Upper Column Components

Floor shift models equipped with automatic transmission use an ignition switch inhibitor and park lock cable. On these models, the park lock cable must be disconnected from ignition switch inhibitor before steering column is removed from vehicle. When removal of steering column is necessary, proceed as follows:

1. Lower steering column to floor of vehicle.
2. Remove shield or other upper column housing.
3. Turn column lock cylinder to the On position.
4. Disconnect park lock cable from ignition switch inhibitor with small screwdriver or punch, Fig. 88.
TURN SIGNAL CANCEL CAM ASSEMBLY, PIVOT & PULSE SWITCH ASSEMBLY & TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY
Disassembly
1. Remove nut retainer, jam nut and steering wheel.
2. Remove turn signal cancel cam assembly, hazard knob screw and hazard warning knob.
3. Position turn signal switch so that signal switch screws and housing cover screw can be removed through openings in switch.
4. Remove housing cover screw and column housing cover.
5. Disconnect wiring protector from opening in instrument panel bracket on jacket and bowl assembly and separate from wires.
6. Disconnect pivot and pulse switch connector from ignition and dimmer switch.
7. Remove pivot switch screw and pivot and pulse switch assembly.
8. Remove turn signal switch screws and disconnect turn signal switch connector from ignition and dimmer switch assembly connector.

9. Remove seventeen-way lock from turn signal connector and disconnect wires on alarm or buzzer assembly from turn signal connector with special tool No. J 35689-A or equivalent, Fig. 62. Wrap wire ends with tape to protect during removal and installation.
10. Remove turn signal switch assembly from column.
Assembly
1. Install turn signal switch assembly and torque screws to 35 lb in
2. Connect wires from alarm or buzzer assembly to turn signal switch connector.
3. Install seventeen-way secondary lock to turn signal connector and snap in place.
4. Connect turn signal switch connector to ignition and dimmer switch connector and snap in place.
5. Install pivot and pulse switch assembly and torque screw to 18 lb in
6. Connect pivot switch connector to ignition and dimmer switch connector and snap in place.
7. Install wiring protector as follows:
a. Wrap protector around all wires passing through instrument panel bracket opening.
b. Close protector so that interlocking grooves engage and slide protector into instrument panel bracket opening on jacket and bowl assembly and snap in place.
8. Install column housing cover and torque screw to 35 lb in
9. Install hazard warning knob and torque screw to 9 lb in
10. Lubricate bottom side of cancel cam with lithium grease and install turn signal cancel cam assembly.
11. Install steering wheel and jam nut, torque jam nut to 30 lb in and secure with nut retainer.
TILT LEVER & BRACKET ASSEMBLY, WHEEL TILT SPRING, LOWER BEARING ASSEMBLY, STEERING SHAFT & HOUSING ASSEMBLY, ALARM ASSEMBLY, STEERING COLUMN LOCK CYLINDER, COLUMN TILT BUMPERS & JACKET & BOWL ASSEMBLY
Disassembly
1. Remove turn signal cancel cam assembly, pivot & pulse switch assembly & turn signal switch assembly as previously described.
2. Pull tilt lever and tilt column all the way up.
3. Insert Phillips tip screwdriver into square opening in spring retainer, push down and turn left to release retainer and wheel tilt spring.
4. Remove spring retainer, tilt spring and tilt spring guide.
5. Remove two lower spring retainers and discard.
6. Remove lower bearing spring and lower bearing seat.
7. Remove adapter screws, adapter and lower bearing assembly.
8. Remove two pivot pins from shaft and housing assembly with special tool No. J 21854-01 or equivalent.
9. Turn lock cylinder to the Run position and pull tilt lever to release shaft and housing assembly.
10. Remove shaft and housing assembly from jacket and bowl assembly.
11. Turn lock cylinder to the Off-Lock position and remove key.
12. Remove alarm assembly by lifting alarm tab with a screwdriver and gently pulling wires to remove.
13. Remove lock retaining screw and lock cylinder.
14. Remove column tilt bumpers with vise grips. If bumper is broken off use a 7/32 inch drill bit to remove remaining piece of bumper.
15. Remove tilt bracket screws and tilt lever and bracket assembly.
16. Remove rod cap from dimmer switch rod and jacket and bowl assembly.
Assembly
1. Install rod cap into jacket and bowl assembly.
2. Install tilt lever and bracket assembly into jacket and bowl assembly and torque tilt bracket screws to 35 lb in
3. Install three tilt bumpers into jacket and bowl assembly until bottomed.
4. Install column lock cylinder and torque screw to 27 lb in
5. Install alarm assembly by pushing down into retaining bore until bottomed with plastic tab covering lock retaining screw.
6. Insert key and turn lock cylinder to the Run position.
7. Install shaft and housing assembly.
8. Lubricate pivot pins with lithium grease and install into pivot holes in shaft and housing assembly until bottomed.
9. Pull tilt lever and tilt column all the way up.
10. Lubricate tilt spring guide with lithium grease and install tilt spring guide into tilt spring.
11. Install guide and tilt spring with spring retainer as follows:
a. Ensure that recess in spring guide engages round locating tab in jacket and bowl assembly.
b. Insert Phillips tip screwdriver into square opening in spring retainer, push down and turn right to lock in place.
12. Install adapter and lower bearing assembly and torque adapter screws to 27 lb in
13. Install lower bearing seat and lower bearing spring.
14. Install two new lower spring retainers and compress spring until retainers are positioned 1.14 inch from lower end of steering shaft.
15. Perform assembly steps for turn signal cancel cam assembly, pivot & pulse switch assembly & turn signal switch assembly as previously described.
Ignition & Dimmer Switch Assembly
Disassembly
1. Place shift lever in the Park position and lock cylinder in the Off position.
2. Remove steering column from vehicle.
3. Disconnect turn signal switch and pivot and pulse switch connectors from ignition and dimmer switch assembly connector.
4. Remove bowl shield screw and nut and remove bowl shield.
5. Remove dimmer and ignition switch assembly as follows:
a. Remove dimmer switch nut, upper mounting stud, then dimmer switch.
b. Remove lower mounting stud and ignition switch from ignition switch actuator rod.
6. Remove dimmer switch actuator rod from rod cap.
Assembly
Fig. 89 Installing Ignition Switch & Actuator:
1. Place the ignition switch slider in the far left position and move back one detent to the right, Off-Lock position. Fig. 89.
2. Insert a 3/32 inch drill bit into the adjustment hole on ignition switch to hold switch slider in proper position during installation.
3. Install ignition switch to switch rod.
4. Install ignition switch to jacket and bowl assembly with lower mounting stud and torque stud to 35 lb in
5. Remove drill bit from ignition switch and install dimmer switch actuator rod, tab first, through hole in instrument panel bracket and hole in dimmer switch rod cap.
6. Tab on rod must engage wide slot in rod cap and snap in place.
7. Install dimmer switch onto actuator rod and dimmer switch assembly on lower mounting stud with dimmer switch nut and upper mounting stud.

8. Adjust dimmer switch by inserting a 3/32 inch drill bit through hole in switch and push switch against actuator rod to remove all lash. Fig. 90.
9. Torque dimmer switch nut and upper mounting stud to 35 lb in
10. Install shield screw and bowl shield nut and torque shield screw to 53 lb in and bowl shield nut to 35 lb in
11. Connect turn signal switch and pivot and pulse switch connectors to ignition and dimmer switch connector and snap in place.
