Lower Column Components
SHAFT, COLUMN HOUSING SUPPORT, SHIFT TUBE, IGNITION SWITCH, DIMMER SWITCH & LOWER BEARINGDISASSEMBLE
1. Remove steering column from vehicle as outlined in Steering Column.
2. Remove bearing retainer, then the attaching screws and the lower bearing.
3. Remove shaft assembly then disconnect lower shaft.
4. Remove centering sphere from upper shaft, then the retainer clip from the sphere.
5. Remove housing support assembly attaching screws, then the housing support assembly and dimmer switch rod.
6. Remove hex nut and hex head bolt, then the dimmer switch and mounting stud.
7. Remove ignition switch and ignition switch actuator.
8. Remove shift tube retaining ring, thrust washer, lock plate, wave washer, then shift tube using removal tool No. J-23072, or equivalent.
9. Remove gear shift bowl.
ASSEMBLE
1. Install gear shift lever bowl to jacket, then the dimmer switch rod to housing support.
2. Install shift tube installer tool No. J-23073-01, or equivalent, wave washer, lock plate, thrust washer, then shift tube retaining ring.
3. Install dimmer switch rod to steering column housing support.
4. Install housing support assembly. Torque attaching screws to 30 lb in
5. Install actuator rod assembly to track in housing support.
6. Install ignition switch and mounting stud, then adjust switch.
7. Install retaining clip and sphere to upper shaft.
8. Install lower shaft to upper shaft with block tooth on shaft lower end of upper shaft at 12 o'clock position and notch at end of lower shaft at 4 o'clock position.
9. Lubricate shaft assembly with lithium grease and install to column.
10. Install column housing assembly to column.
11. Position column assembly and align switch actuator rack with pin on end of actuator rod.
12. Pull back on tilt lever, pushing column housing assembly onto column housing support assembly.
13. Release tilt lever to lock shoes, then remove tilt lever.
14. Lubricate inner surface of lower bearing with lithium grease, then install bearing and retaining screws.
15. Install bearing retainer.
16. Install dimmer switch, hex nut and hex head bolt, then adjust dimmer switch.
17. Assemble column housing, lock shoes, actuator sector, switch actuator rack, bearings and lock bolt.
18. Assemble lock housing cover, cover end cap, pivot and pulse switch, dimmer switch rod actuator and tilt spring.
19. Assemble inflator module, coil, shaft lock, turn signal cancel cam, upper bearing spring and seat, inner race, turn signal switch, buzzer switch and lock cylinder set.
