DISASSEMBLE
1. Disassemble coil, shaft lock, turn signal cancel cam, upper bearing spring and seat, inner race turn signal switch, buzzer switch and lock cylinder set.
2. Disassemble lock housing cover, cover end cap, pivot and switch, dimmer switch rod actuator and tilt spring.
3. Disassemble column housing, lock shoes, actuator sector, switch actuator rack, bearings and lock bolt.
4. Remove lock housing cover attaching screws and the cover, then the tilt lever.
5. Remove cover housing end cap, base plate and dimmer switch rod actuator, then gently pull pivot switch wire harness through column housing and gear shift lever bowl.
6. On models with cruise control, unplug connector from base plate and remove multi-function lever.
7. On all models, remove spring retainer, then the spring and spring guide.
8. Using pivot pin removal tool No. J-21854-01, or equivalent, remove pivot pins, Fig. 50, then install tilt lever.
9. Remove column housing assembly by pulling back on tilt lever and pulling housing down and away from column.
10. Remove steering column from vehicle. Once steering column is removed from vehicle, the column is extremely susceptible to damage. Dropping column assembly on its end could collapse steering shaft or loosen plastic injections that maintain column rigidity. Leaning on column assembly may cause jacket to bend or deform. Any of the above damage may impair column's collapsible design. If it is necessary to remove steering wheel, use only the specified steering wheel puller. Under no conditions should end of shaft be hammered on because hammering could loosen plastic injections that maintain column rigidity.
11. Remove bearing retainer, then the spring retainer.
12. Remove lower bearing spring, then the lower bearing seat.
13. Remove screws and lower bearing, then the shaft assembly. Check for accident damage.
14. Remove lower shaft.
15. Remove sphere from shaft assembly, then the retainer clip from sphere.
16. Remove housing support assembly retaining screws, then the housing support assembly and dimmer switch rod.
17. Remove hex nut and hex head bolt, then the dimmer switch and mounting stud.
18. Remove ignition switch and actuator rod assembly, then the shift tube retaining ring.
19. Remove thrust washer, then the gear shift lever spring.
20. Using shift tube removal tool No. J-23072, or equivalent, remove shift tube.
21. Remove lock plate and wave washer, then the gear shift lever bowl.

ASSEMBLE
1. Install gear shift lever spring to gear shift lever bowl, then the gear shift lever bowl to the shift tube jacket.
2. Lubricate wave washer with lithium grease and install it.
3. Using shift tube installer tool No. J-23073-1, or equivalent, install lock plate, then the shift tube.
4. Install thrust washer, then the shift tube retaining ring.
5. Install dimmer switch rod to housing support.
6. Install housing support assembly, torque attaching bolts to 79 lb in
7. Install actuator rod assembly to track in housing support.
8. Install retaining clip and sphere to shaft assembly.
9. Install lower shaft to shaft assembly with block tooth on shaft end of shaft assembly at 12 o'clock position and notch at lower end of shaft at 4 o'clock position.
10. Lubricate shaft assembly with lithium grease and install to column.
11. Assemble lock housing cover, cover end cap, pivot and switch, dimmer switch rod actuator and tilt spring.
12. Assemble column housing, lock shoes, actuator sector, switch actuator rack, bearings and lock bolt.
13. Assemble coil, shaft lock, turn signal cancel cam, upper bearing spring and seat, inner race turn signal switch, buzzer switch and lock cylinder set.
14. Lubricate inner surface of lower bearing with lithium grease, then install lower bearing and screws.
15. Install lower bearing seat, then the lower bearing spring.
16. Install spring retainer, then the bearing retainer.
17. Install dimmer switch, hex nut and hex head bolt, then adjust dimmer switch, Fig. 51.
18. Install ignition switch and mounting stud, then adjust ignition switch, Fig. 52.
19. Install column to vehicle instrument panel.
