"B" SHIFT SOLENOID - OFF
THIRD CLUTCH - APPLIED
FORWARD BAND - APPLIED
THIRD ROLLER CLUTCH - HOLDING

To obtain third gear, the PCM receives input signals from the VS Sensor and TP Sensor in order to "de-energize" or "turn off current" supply to "B" shift solenoid (315) allowing "B" shift solenoid fluid to exhaust. When this occurs, spring force moves the 4-3 manual downshift valve (360), and, line pressure at the end of the 2-3 shift valve (357) moves the 3-2 manual downshift valve (356) against spring pressure. Line pressure also at the manual 3-2 downshift valve (356) enters the "B" shift solenoid off passage and assists in preventing the 1-2 shift valve (318) from moving. When the 2-3 shift valve (357) moves, D-4 fluid enters the 3rd fluid passage. The 3rd fluid passage feeds fluid to:
^ the converter clutch solenoid (315), where it exhausts through the solenoid
^ the 1-2 shift valve (318), and,
^ to seat No. 9 checkball (372) forcing fluid through an orifice and into the 3rd clutch passage.

The 3rd clutch passage directs fluid to seat No. 4 checkball (372) sending fluid into the 3rd Clutch/Lo-1st passage to apply the 3rd clutch. 3rd clutch fluid pressure is also sent to the 2-3 accumulator piston (136) and forces the piston against the spring and 2-3 accumulator fluid to cushion the 3rd clutch apply. The 2-3 accumulator fluid is then forced to exhaust at the 2-3 accumulator valve (343). In third gear, the input clutch is released allowing input clutch apply fluid to exhaust through the 3-4 shift valve (362) into the input clutch feed passage. At the 2-3 shift valve (357), exhausting input clutch apply fluid is directed into the D-3 passage and out the manual valve (404).

"B" Shift Solenoid (315): De-energizes, allowing "B" shift solenoid fluid to exhaust through the solenoid. Spring pressure forces the 4-3 manual downshift valve (360) to move while line pressure moves the 2-3 shift valve (357) and 3-2 manual downshift valve (356).

No. 9 Checkball (372): Located in the valve body (300), forces 3rd fluid through a feed orifice and into the 3rd clutch passage.

No. 4 Checkball (372): Located in the channel plate (400), directs 3rd clutch fluid into the 3rd clutch/b- 1st passage to apply the 3rd clutch.

2-3 Shift Valve (357): When shifted, allows D-4 fluid to enter the 3rd passage to: stroke the 2-3 accumulator piston (136); apply the 3rd clutch; and, direct fluid to the converter clutch solenoid (315). The 2-3 shift valve also allows the input clutch apply fluid to exhaust into the D-3 passage and out at the manual valve (404).

2-3 Accumulator Piston (136): Cushions the apply of the 3rd clutch by using 3rd clutch fluid to force the piston against spring force and 2-3 accumulator fluid.

2-3 Accumulator Valve (343): Regulates the exhaust of 2-3 accumulator fluid during 3rd clutch apply.
