Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Ball Joint

Replace the ball joints if any looseness is detected in the joint, or the ball joint seal is cut. Complete the following steps in order to inspect the ball joints:
1. Raise the front of the vehicle.
2. Allow the suspension to hang free.
3. Grasp the tire at the top and bottom. Move the top of the tire in an in-and-out motion.
4. Inspect for any horizontal movement of the knuckle relative to the control arm.
5. Replace the ball joint if the following conditions exist:
^ The ball stud is disconnected from the knuckle and looseness is detected.
^ The ball stud twists in its socket while using finger pressure.

Inspect for ball stud tightness in the knuckle boss. Shake the wheel and feel for movement of the stud end or nut at the knuckle boss. Replace any worn or damaged ball joints and knuckles.
