Timing Cover: Service and Repair
REMOVAL PROCEDURE^ Tools Required
- J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.
2. Drain the cooling system. Recover the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
3. Install the J 28467-360.
4. Remove the engine mount assembly. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
5. Remove the engine mount bracket support.
6. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
7. Remove the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
8. Loosen the top two A/C compressor bolts.
9. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
10. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
11. Remove the right front splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body and Frame.
12. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
13. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
14. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner replacement.
15. Remove the engine mount strut. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement.
16. Remove the right wheel speed sensor connector and the wire harness from the suspension support.
17. Remove the right ball joint. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
18. Remove the right stabilizer shaft from the right suspension support and the right control arm.
19. Remove the right suspension support. Refer to Steering and Suspension Crossmember Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
20. Remove the A/C compressor to oil pan bolts.
21. Remove the oil filter.
22. Remove the oil filter adapter. Refer to Oil Filter Adapter and Valve Assembly Replacement.
23. Remove the engine mount strut bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement.
24. Remove the engine to transmission brace.
25. Drain the engine oil.
26. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (2.4L) in Starting and Charging.
27. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement.
28. Remove the crankshaft sensor.
29. Remove the lower front cover bolts.
30. Lower the vehicle.
31. Remove the thermostat.
32. Remove the water outlet housing. Refer to Thermostat Replacement.
33. Remove the engine front cover bolts.
34. Remove the engine front cover.
35. Remove the front crankshaft oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Replacement.
36. Clean the mating surfaces of the following items:
36.1. The front cover.
36.2. The oil pan
36.3. The cylinder block
37. Clean the sealing surfaces with degreaser.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Install the front cover gasket. Do not damage the sealing surfaces.
2. Apply sealer to both sides of the lower tabs of the front cover gasket. Use GM RTV sealer GM P/N 1052080 or its equivalent.
3. Install the front cover oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Replacement.
4. Place the front cover on the engine.
5. Install the upper two front cover bolts.
^ Tighten the bolts to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
NOTICE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
6. Install the radiator hose to the coolant housing.
7. Install the radiator pipe. Refer to Radiator Pipe Replacement - Outlet in Cooling System.
8. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
9. Install the lower engine front cover bolts.
^ Tighten the small bolts (1) to 21 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the large bolts (2) to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
10. Install the crankshaft sensor.
^ Tighten the crankshaft sensor bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
11. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement.
12. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (2.4L) in Starting and Charging.
13. Install the engine to transmission brace.
14. Install the engine mount strut bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement.
15. Install the oil filler adapter.
^ Tighten the oil filter adapter bolt to 9 Nm (14 ft. lbs.).
16. Install the oil filter.
^ Tighten the oil filter to 13 Nm (115 inch lbs.).
17. Install the A/C compressor to the oil pan bolts.
18. Install the right suspension support. Refer to Steering and Suspension Crossmember Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
19. Install the stabilizer shaft to the right suspension support and the control arm.
20. Install the right ball joint. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
21. Install the right wheel speed sensor connector and the wire harness to the suspension support.
22. Install the engine mount strut. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement.
23. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement.
24. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement.
25. Install the flywheel inspection cover.
26. Install the right splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body and Frame.
27. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Wheel Installation in Tires and Wheels.
28. Lower the vehicle.
29. Install the A/C compressor top bolts.
30. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Steering and Suspension.
31. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
32. Install the engine mount bracket support and bolt.
^ Tighten the 8 mm bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the 12 mm bolts to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
33. Install the engine mount assembly. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement.
34. Remove the engine support fixture.
35. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
36. Fill the engine with oil.
37. Connect the negative battery cable.
