Fuel Pump Pickup Filter: Service and Repair
REMOVAL PROCEDURETOOLS REQUIRED
^ J 34730 Fuel Pressure Gauge
^ J 35731 Fuel Sender Spanner Wrench
1. Relieve the fuel system fuel pressure. Refer to the Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure. Service and Repair
2. Drain the fuel tank (1). Refer to Fuel Tank Draining Procedure.
3. Remove the fuel tank (2).
4. Remove the fuel sender assembly (4).
5. Inspect the position of the fuel pump fuel strainer (2) for installation.
6. Support the fuel pump (1) with one hand and grasp the fuel pump fuel strainer with the other hand.
7. Pull the fuel pump fuel strainer (2) off of the fuel pump (1).
8. Inspect the fuel pump fuel strainer. If the fuel pump fuel strainer is contaminated, the fuel tank should be cleaned. Refer to Fuel System Cleaning.
NOTE: In order to prevent damage to the fuel pump, Do Not run the fuel pump unless the fuel pump is submerged in fuel.
9. Discard the fuel pump fuel strainer after inspection.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
NOTE: Always re-attach the fuel lines and fuel filter with all original type fasteners and hardware.
Do not repair sections of fuel pipes.
1. Position the fuel sender upside down.
2. Reinstall the new fuel pump strainer (2) on the fuel pump (1) and push the outer edge of the fuel pump fuel strainer until the fuel pump strainer is fully seated.
3. Reinstall the fuel sender assembly.
4. Reinstall the fuel tank (2).
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Add fuel to the vehicle.
7. Reinstall the fuel tank filler pipe cap.
8. Reinstall the negative battery cable.
9. Inspect for leaks.
9.1. Turn the ignition switch On for 2 seconds.
9.2. Turn the ignition switch Off for 10 seconds.
9.3. Turn the ignition switch On.
9.4. Check for fuel leaks.
10. Reinstall the fuel injector sight shield.
