Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing & Jacket - Assemble

ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE

- Tools Required
- J 23073-01 Shift Tube Installer

IMPORTANT: Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180°. Align the marks on the shafts from the disassemble procedure.





1. Apply synthetic grease to the exposed centering sphere. Install the lower steering shaft assembly (2) to the race and upper shaft assembly.





2. Install the gear shift bowl shroud (7).
3. Install the gear shift bowl assembly (6).
4. Install the shift lever spring (5).
5. Install the wave washer (4).
6. Install the lock plate (3).
7. Install the thrust washer (2).
8. Install the shift tube retaining ring (1).





9. Install the shift tube assembly (1) using J23073-01.





10. Install the shift lever gate (1) secure with 2 oval head cross recess screws (6).

NOTICE: Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

- Tighten the screws to 1 Nm (9 inch lbs.).

11. Install the steering column housing support assembly (4) with the dimmer switch rod (3) still attached.
12. Install the 4 TORCH head screws (2).
- Tighten the screws to 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.).





13. Install the steering shaft assembly.





14. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
15. Install 2 hex washer head tapping screws (2)
- Tighten the screws to 5.5 Nm (49 inch lbs.).





16. Install the bearing retainer.





17. Install the lower bearing seat (3).
18. Install the lower bearing spring (2).
19. Install the lower spring retainer (1).





20. Install the retainer washer assembly (1).
21. Install the electrical BTSI actuator. Refer to Auto Trans Shift Lock Control - Assemble.
22. Install the ignition switch assembly. Refer to Ignition Switch Assembly - Assemble.
23. Install the steering column housing assembly. Refer to Steering Column Housing - Assemble.
24. Install the shift lever assembly. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement.
