Diagnostic Chart.:

Wiring Diagram.:

DESCRIPTION:

The cam sensor is located on the distributor shaft and provides one pulse per rotation of the distributor. The PCM uses the cam sensor signal to determine the location of the camshaft for proper fuel distribution. Code E41 sets when the PCM is receiving reference pulses and does not detect any cam sensor pulses.

TEST CONDITIONS:

1. Code E12 not set.

2. Distributor reference pulses being received.

3. Engine speed 1600 rpm or less.

FAILURE CONDITIONS:

No cam reference pulse received from HEI module for 5 seconds.

ACTION TAKEN:

1. PCM/ECM turns on "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" telltale.

NOTES ON FAULT TREE:

1. This trouble tree requires the use of four jumper wires.

2. The grounding screw is located on the metal tab that is attached to the plastic fitting on the distributor harness.

NOTE ON INTERMITTENTS:

Manipulate affected wiring while the engine is running. If the fault is induced the code will set and the wiring should be repaired for an intermittent open or short to ground. Disconnect and reconnect the distributor connector and PCM connector and ensure they are latched.
