Fuel Filter: Service and Repair
Fuel Filter:
WARNING:
^ To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury always follow the proper procedure for disconnecting and connecting fuel pipe quick connect fittings. This will ensure good connections and prevent possible fuel leaks.
^ Safety glasses must be worn when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury.
^ To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle at the opposite end from which components are being removed. This will reduce the possibility of the vehicle falling off of the hoist.
REMOVAL:
1. Relieve the fuel system pressure, refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Raise the vehicle.
3. Disconnect the fuel pipe inlet connector. Refer to the QUICK CONNECT procedures below.
4. Loosen the filter from the bracket.
5. Disconnect the outlet connector by using the same procedure as that of the inlet connector, and remove the filter from the vehicle.
INSTALLATION:
1. Place the filter loosely in position.
2. Connect the outlet connector onto the filter male pipe ends pressing firmly together until the springs snap into place.
3. Check that the connector is locked "ON" by trying to pull the connector away from the male tube end of the filter.
4. Connect the inlet connector using the same procedure as that for the outlet connector. Check that the connector is locked "ON".
5. Secure the filter to the vehicle.
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. START the engine and check for fuel leaks.
Fuel Line Connector - Type 1:
TYPE 1 QUICK CONNECTOR
DISCONNECT:
1. Flush the fuel pipe quick connector with water and using compressed air, blow out the debris from the connector.
2. Remove the collar lock.
3. Grasp the large collar of the connector, twist in either direction and pull the connector off the male pipe end.
CONNECT:
1. Using a clean shop towel, wipe off the male pipe end.
2. Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male pipe end.
3. Before connecting the quick connectors, ensure that the large collar of the connector has rotated to its original position. Examine the connector inside diameter, the springs must be visible.
4. Insert the connector onto the male pipe end pressing firmly together until the springs snap into place.
5. Check that the connector is locked "ON" by trying to pull the connector away from the male pipe end.
6. Install the collar lock onto the connector. Snap the legs of the collar over the flats on the connector body.
Fuel Line Connector - Type 2:
TYPE 2 QUICK CONNECTOR
DISCONNECT:
1. Twist the quick connector 1/4 turn in each direction to loosen any debris within the connector.
2. Using compressed air, blow the debris out of the connector.
3. Squeeze the plastic tabs of the male end connector and pull apart.
CONNECT:
1. Using a clean shop towel, wipe off the male pipe end.
2. Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male pipe end.
3. Push the connector onto the male pipe end until the plastic tabs snap into place.
4. Check that the connector is locked "ON" by trying to pull the connector away from the male pipe end.
