The [1][2]torque converter clutch applies during third gear operation after the PCM receives appropriate input signals from the VS sensor, TP sensor and engine coolant temperature sensor. When the proper vehicle operating conditions have been met, the "on/off" Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid (315) and the torque converter clutch Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) solenoid (325) are simultaneously "energized". The PWM solenoid duty cycle is "ramped" between 0 and 100% to regulate PWM fluid pressure to the converter clutch regulator valve (330). Regulated apply pressure is then sent to the converter clutch valve (335) into the apply passage. Apply fluid seats the #1 checkball (372) against release fluid and applies the torque converter clutch. Apply fluid is also at the torque converter clutch blow off valve (417- 20) to exhaust excess fluid pressure. Converter feed fluid at the converter clutch valve (335) is allowed to feed into the cooler passage, through the cooler check valve (28), through the cooler and into the lube system of the transaxle.
[1][2]Torque Converter Clutch PWM Solenoid (325): Controlled by the PCM, it modifies the PWM solenoid duty cycle to vary the feed pressure in the PWM fluid passage to the converter clutch regulator valve (330). This arrangement provides for accurate control of the regulated converter clutch apply (and release) pressure.
Converter Clutch Regulator Valve (330): Provides regulated apply fluid to the converter clutch valve (335) into the apply fluid passage.
Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid (315): When energized, TCC signal fluid shifts the converter clutch valve (335) against spring pressure.
Converter Clutch Valve (335): When shifted, directs regulated apply fluid into the apply passage; converter feed fluid into the cooler passage and, allows converter release fluid to exhaust.
#1 Checkball (372): Located in the channel plate (400), blocks release fluid while sending apply fluid to the [1][2]torque converter clutch blow off valve (417-20).
Cooler Check Valve (28): Allows cooler fluid to pass through the cooler and provide lubrication for the transaxle. It also prevents converter drainback when the engine is off.
