Engine: Service and Repair


1. On models equipped with airbag, disable airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
2. On all models, disconnect battery cable from battery, then remove air cleaner assembly.
3. Drain cooling system, then disconnect radiator and heater hoses.
4. Remove upper fan shroud, then remove engine cooling fan.
5. Remove power steering pump from bracket and position aside with hoses attached.
6. Remove A/C compressor from mounting and position aside with hoses attached.
7. Disconnect accelerator and T.V. cables from throttle body.
8. Remove radiator from vehicle.
9. Disconnect electrical wiring and vacuum hoses as necessary to permit engine removal. Tag electrical wiring and vacuum hoses so they may be installed at the same locations.
10. On 1989-90 models, disconnect AIR hose at pipe to converter.
11. On all models, disconnect ground strap at engine bulkhead.
12. Scribe alignment marks on hinges, then remove hood.
13. On 1989-90 models, remove distributor cap.
14. On 1991-92 models, remove distributor, wiper motor and MAP sensor.
15. On all models, disconnect cruise control cable, if equipped.
16. Disconnect battery ground cable from cylinder head.
17. Raise and support vehicle, then drain crankcase.
18. Disconnect electrical wiring from starter motor.
19. Remove exhaust crossover pipe and catalytic convertor as an assembly.
20. Remove flywheel cover, then remove flywheel to converter attaching bolts.
21. Remove engine mount through bolts.
22. On TBI models, wrap shop towel around fuel hose to steel line connection to prevent fuel spillage, then disconnect fuel hoses from fuel lines. On carbureted engines, disconnect fuel line from fuel pump.
23. On all models, disconnect converter clutch wiring at transmission.
24. Detach transmission oil cooler lines from clip at oil pan.
25. On 1992 4.3L/V6-262 engine, remove converter AIR pipe from exhaust manifold.
26. On all models, remove transmission to engine attaching bolts.
27. Lower vehicle, then support transmission using a suitable jack.
28. Install a suitable engine lifting fixture to engine, then remove engine from vehicle.
29. Reverse procedure to install.
30. Rearm airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
