INTERMITTENT OR HARD DRIVEABILITY SYMPTOMS
MODELS AFFECTED:
1991-1993 DE VILLES AND FLEETWOODS (FWD)
A small number of 1991-1993 DeVilles and Fleetwoods (FWD) may experience one or more of the following driveability symptoms intermittently and/or during engine movement as follows:
^ Engine stall
^ Loss of power or hesitation
^ Engine surge/miss at cruising or idle speeds
^ Long crank and/or no start
^ Erratic or no shift condition
^ Black smoke/rotten egg odor from tail pipe
^ ECM code(s) 12, 14, 22, 23, 32, 41, 53, 71, or 73
^ RH relay center fuse(s) 5, 6, 7, or 8 blown
^ COOLANT TEMP, STOP ENGINE TEMP, OIL, or TRACTION OFF warning indicators ON
^ ECC system not cooling or A/C clutch inoperative
These conditions may be due to a short to ground of one or more circuits contained in the engine wire harness where it is retained to the rear valve cover by two metal clips. Refer to Figure 1. The clip locating tab may be protruding into the conduit and chaffing wires causing circuit to short. To repair this condition use the following procedure:
1. To verify, loosen and remove engine harness from each clip.
2. Inspect wire harness at clip locations for damaged circuits. Refer to Section 8A of the appropriate Service Information Manual for wiring repairs.
3. Bend locating tab to the inside surface of each clip. Refer to Figure 2.
4. Wrap the engine harness conduit with electrical tape where it is retained, carefully position harness, and secure.
