Steering Column - Dissemble & Assemble

Disassembly
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove column from vehicle.
2. Turn ignition switch to the Run position.
3. Remove horn pad, switch and horn connector.
4. Remove three small bolts and unscrew telescoping adjuster from shaft.
5. Remove telescoping lever from column, nut from steering column shaft and steering wheel.
6. Remove key warning buzzer and retaining clip.
7. Remove lock cylinder retaining screw inside lock housing column cover and lock cylinder from column.
8. Remove hazard switch, tilt column lever and turn signal/cruise control lever.
9. Remove lock housing column cover, lower column cover and fuse panel cover.
10. Disconnect harness connector, then remove wiring protector and multifunction turn signal switch from column.
11. Install tilt lever and place column in the full up position.
12. Remove upper bearing seat, inner race and bearing.
13. Remove tilt spring retainer, spring and guide.
14. Use a punch to remove driveshaft and sector.

15. Remove pivot pins using special tool No. J 21854-01 or equivalent, Fig. 63.
16. Tilt housing by pulling upward on tilt lever and pulling housing upward until it stops. Move housing to the right to disengage rack from actuator.
17. Remove race and upper shaft assembly from lower shaft at centering sphere.
18. Remove gearshift lever, gate and column support.
19. Remove lock plate, retaining ring and washers.
20. Remove shift tube from shift bowl using special tool No. J 23072 or equivalent.
21. Remove lower bearing and retainer.
Assembly
1. Install lower bearing and retainer.
2. Install gear shift tube to bowl using special tool No. J 23073-01 or equivalent.
3. Install lock plate, retaining ring and washers.
4. Install column support, gearshift lever and gate.
5. Install race and upper shaft assembly to lower shaft at centering sphere.
6. Install tilt housing and new pivot pins.
7. Install driveshaft and sector.
8. Install tilt spring, retainer and guide.
9. Install upper bearing, seat and inner race.
10. Install multifunction switch to column, wiring protector and connect harness connector.
11. Install fuse panel, lower column and lock housing column covers.
12. Install hazard switch, turn signal/cruise control and tilt column levers to column.
13. Install lock cylinder and retaining screw to column.
14. Install key warning buzzer and retaining clip.
15. Install steering wheel to column shaft and torque nut to 35 lb ft
16. Install telescope locking lever on shaft and telescope adjuster.
17. Position locking lever and bolts along the marks made by the bolts when tightened, torque bolts to 35 lb in
18. Check operation of telescoping lever for proper release and tightening within the lever's range of motion. Ensure that the wheel is free to telescope when the lever is all the way to the left and securely locked when lever is all the way to the right. If necessary adjust using the slotted locking lever bolt holes.
19. Install horn contact wire and horn pad assembly, then connect battery ground cable.
