Fuel Filter: Service and Repair

Rear Fuel Feed, Return And Vapor Pipes And Fuel Filter:

WARNING:
^ To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury always follow the proper procedure for disconnecting and connecting fuel pipe quick connect fittings. This will ensure good connections and prevent possible fuel leaks.
^ Safety glasses must be worn when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury.
^ To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle at the opposite end from which components are being removed. This will reduce the possibility of the vehicle falling off of the hoist.



REMOVAL:


1. Relieve the fuel system pressure, refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
4. Disconnect the fuel filter bracket release tabs.
5. Grasp the filter and one fuel line fitting. Twist the quick-connect fitting 1/4 turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within the fitting. Repeat for the other fuel line fitting.

WARNING: Safety glasses must be worn when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury.
^ Using compressed air, blow out the dirt from the quick-connect fittings at both ends of the fuel filter.

6. Disconnect the quick-connect fittings.
^ Squeeze the plastic tabs of the male connector and pull apart. Repeat for the other fitting.
7. Remove the fuel filter.

INSTALLATION:

WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury:
^ Before installing a new filter, always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to both ends of the filter. This will ensure proper reconnection and prevent a possible fuel leak. (During normal operation, the O-rings located in the female connector will swell and may prevent proper reconnection if not lubricated).
^ If the new filter is nicked, scratched or damaged during installation, it must be replaced.

1. Remove the protective caps from the new filter.
2. Install the new plastic connector retainers on the filter inlet and outlet tubes.
3. Install the filter in the retainer noting the direction of flow indicated on the filter.
^ Install in the same position as the old filter.
4. Connect the quick-connect fittings.
a. Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to both tube ends of the filter.
b. Push the connectors together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap into place.
c. Once installed, pull on both ends of each connection to make sure the connection is secure.
5. Install the fuel filter into the retainer and engage the bracket tabs.
6. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
7. Connect the negative battery cable.

INSPECT

^ Turn the ignition switch to "ON" for two seconds, then turn to "OFF" for five seconds. Again, turn to "ON" position and check for fuel leaks.
