P058
PCM Circuit:
DESCRIPTION
Code P058 is an indication that the PASS-Key Fuel Enable Input has failed after a good signal was received in a given engine run cycle. The PASS-Key system enables engine operation by:
1. Allowing the starter motor to engage.
2. Issuing a Fuel Enable signal to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Once the engine is running the PCM continuously monitors the Fuel Enable signal, testing for a circuit or PASS-Key module failure that would prohibit a positive fuel enable on future ignition cycles. The PCM will not cancel fuel injection after it has been approved within a given ignition cycle. Therefore, stalling conditions cannot be the result of PASS-Key system failures.
TEST CONDITIONS
1. Engine run indication asserted.
2. PASS-Key engine start timer expired.
FAILURE CONDITIONS
PASS-Key Fuel Enable Input is not correct but has been correct wit in this engine run cycle.
ACTION TAKEN
1. "THEFT SYSTEM PROBLEM, CAR MAY NOT RESTART" message is displayed on Driver Information Center (DIC).
2. Enable fuel injection on future ignition cycles without regard for the PASS-Key Fuel Enable input status.
NOTES ON FAULT TREE
1. If engine will crank, the problem has been isolated to the PASS-Key Decoder Module, the PCM or the Fuel Enable circuit. If the engine will not crank refer to PASS-Key System diagnosis.
2. Checking the voltage input to the PCM will identify if the PCM is at fault. The typical signal will be approximately 2.5 volts.
3. Voltage too low, could be a PASS-Key Decoder Module, a poor connection at the PCM, or a short to ground in the Fuel Enable circuit.
4. Voltage too high, could be a PASS-Key Decoder Module, a poor connection at the PASS-Key Decoder Module, a short to voltage or an open in the Fuel Enable circuit.
NOTES ON INTERMITTENTS
If Code P058 is set intermittently the following could be a cause:
1. Intermittent short to ground or voltage on CKT 229.
2. Intermittent open in CKT 229.
3. Intermittent loss of power or ground to the PASS-Key Decoder module. The PASS-Key Decoder Module reads the ignition key once each ignition cycle when the ignition is first turned "ON," therefore, faults in the key pellet and circuits to the ignition lock cylinder can cause a no start condition but cannot cause a stall or Code P058.
