S043

CODE S043 SPEED SIGNAL FAULT

TEST CONDITIONS:
The RSS control module compares calculated road speed to the IPC road speed.

FAULT CONDITIONS:
Car must be driven over 20 mph for code to set. If the IPC road speed is greater than 20 MPH while the RSS road speed is less than 3 MPH for 10 seconds, this error is activated.

ACTION TAKEN:
Set code S043, turn on "SERVICE RIDE CONTROL" message, assume a default speed value, and degrade SSS.

DESCRIPTION:
With every regularly scheduled diagnostic communication, the IPC passes its calculated road speed to the RSS control module. The module compares this road speed to the RSS calculated road speed. If the IPC road speed is greater than 20 MPH while the RSS road speed is less than 3 MPH for 10 seconds, this error is activated.

NOTES ON FAULT TREE:
[1] Refer to notes on intermittents.
[2] Some meters may show readings that switch between 0 and battery voltage instead of averaging.
[3] An intermittent short to ground and an open or short to voltage could cause an intermittent Speed Sensitive Steering assist condition and/or an intermittent firm/soft ride condition.
[4] Refer to clearing codes.

NOTES ON INTERMITTENTS:
If the customer complains of harsh ride but the car has no RSS codes set, check for erratic HVAC operation. If HVAC operation is erratic, check RSS Data SD20 and IPC Inputs for road speed. If both are equal to zero when car is driven, there is a problem with the PCM.

IMPORTANT:
^ WHEN ALL DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIRS ARE COMPLETE, CLEAR CODES AND VERIFY OPERATION.
