Sub Section B - Housing Cover - Column Shift - With Sensor

INCLUDES:
COL HSG COVER END CAP
LOCK HOUSING COVER ASSEMBLY
PIVOT & PULSE SWITCH ASSEMBLY
DIMMER SWITCH ROD ACTUATOR
TILT SPRING ASSEMBLY


^ Tools Required:
- J 23653-SIR Lock Plate Compressor
- J 39246 Tilt Spring Compressor

IMPORTANT
^ Before doing any service procedures, removal of Inflator Module and Steering Wheel is needed.

IMPORTANT
^ Remove only those components necessary to do repairs.





REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Do all steps, "REMOVE OR DISCONNECT", Sub Section A.
2. Housing cover end cap (25).





IMPORTANT
^ Remove cruise control and multi-function lever connectors from base plate (24) and disconnect.
^ Remove multi-function lever.





3. Cover screws (16).
4. Tilt lever.





5. Lock housing cover assembly (19).
6. Column housing cover endbase plate (24) and dimmer switch rod actuator (21).
7. Switch actuator pivot pin (22).





8. Pivot & pulse switch assembly (23).
^ Let switch hang freely if removal is not needed.
^ To remove switch (23):
A. Pivot & pulse switch connector from bulkhead connector.
B. Gently pull wire harness through column.
9. Wire protector shield (36).
10. Seat counterbore of tool J39246 over end of race & upper shaft assembly (56).
11. Thread and seat standard hexagon nut on race & upper assembly shaft (56) to secure tool.
12. Align square extension on end of tool bolt with square hole in spring retainer (52) and seat.
13. Rotate tool bolt clockwise with wrench until it contacts surface of tool block.
14. Rotate hexagon section on end of tool bolt counter clockwise approximately quarter turn.





15. Unscrew tool bolt until wheel tilt spring (51) and spring retainer (52) are loose and free of tool.
16. Remove spring retainer (52), wheel tilt spring (51), spring guide (50), and tool J 39246.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

NOTICE: If new wheel tilt spring (51) is to be installed, grease wheel tilt spring (51) and spring guide (50).

NOTICE: Refer to the fastener NOTICE in Service Precautions. Failure to do so may result in component damage or malfunctioning of steering column.

1. Install spring guide (50), wheel tilt spring (51), and spring retainer (52) to steering column housing (46).
2. Align securing tabs on spring retainer (52) with slots in tilt spring hole.
3. Tool J 39246 to race & upper shaft assembly (56) and spring retainer (52).
^ Do steps 10 through 13, "REMOVE OR DISCONNECT", SUB SECTION B, to set up tool and compress wheel tilt spring (51).
4. Rotate hexagon section on end of tool bolt clockwise around a quarter turn to lock retainer (52) into place.
5. Unscrew tool bolt and remove from race & upper shaft (56).
^ Wheel tilt spring (51) and spring retainer (52) must be locked into position in steering column housing (46).

INSPECT
^ Tilt housing (46) to all positions to ensure smooth and proper operation of tilt spring

6. Pivot & pulse switch assembly (23) to lock housing cover assembly (19).
7. Switch actuator pivot pin (22) to switch assembly (23) and cover assembly (19).
8. Pivot & pulse switch wire harness through steering column.
^ Switch connector to bulkhead connector.
9. Dimmer switch rod actuator (21) to column housing cover end base plate (24).
^ Lubricate with lithium grease.
10. Column housing cover end base plate (24) to lock housing cover assembly (19).
^ Bottom edge of dimmer switch rod actuator (21) must rest on bend in dimmer switch rod (88).
11. Wire protector shield (36).
12. Lock housing cover assembly (19).
13. Screws (16). Tighten screw in 12 o'clock position first, screw in 8 o'clock position second, and screw in 3 o'clock position third.
^ Tighten screws (16) in same order to 9 Nm (80 lb in).

14. Install multi-function lever.
15. Plug multi-function lever and cruise control connector together and mount on base plate (24).
16. Column housing cover end cap (25).
17. Do all steps, "INSTALL OR CONNECT", Sub Section A.
