Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing & Jacket - Disassemble

Disassembly Procedure

- Tools Required
- J21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover





1. Remove the lock module assembly.
Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module

2. Remove the linear shift assembly, shift lever and the electrical BTSI actuator only.
Refer to Linear Shift Assembly.

3. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly only.
Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly

4. Remove the wire harness assembly only.
Refer to Wire Harness Assembly

5. Remove the telescope drive motor assembly and cable only.
Refer to Telescope Motor Assembly

6. Remove the tilt drive motor assembly and cable only.
Refer to Tilt Motor Assembly

7. Remove 1 TORX(R) head screw from the tilt and telescope module.
8. Slide the tilt and telescope module out from the steering column.





9. Remove the boot (5).
10. Remove the steering shaft seal (4).
11. Remove the sensor retainer (3).
12. Remove the sensor locator (2).
13. Remove the sensor steer assembly (1).





14. Remove 1 TORX(R) head screw from the bottom bracket.
15. Remove the bracket.





16. Gently pry the lower shield assembly off of the steering column.





17. Remove 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J21854-01,





18. Unscrew the lead screw.





19. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2) with the steering shaft (3) still attached.





20. Remove the tilt head assembly (1) from the steering shaft assembly (2).





21. Using a press remove the bearing holders.

Important: Mark the race and upper shaft (1) and the lower steering shaft (2) to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering -wheel to be turned 180 degrees.





22. Tilt the upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the steering shaft assembly and disengage.





23. Remove 2 TORX(R) screws from the dampener.





24. Remove and discard 4 support screws from the steering column support.
25. Remove the steering column support.
26. Check the steering column for accident damage.
