Cylinder Head Replacement - Right

Tools Required
- J 28410GasketRemover
- J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter

Removal Procedure
1. Drain the cooling system.







2. Remove the intake manifold flange.
3. Remove the water crossover.

Important: Remove ONLY the exhaust camshaft if the cylinder head is NOT going to be replaced.

4. Remove the right camshafts.
5. Remove the timing belt tensioner.
6. Remove ONLY the 2 bolts securing the rear timing belt cover to the right cylinder head.
7. Remove the right exhaust manifold.







8. Remove the right cylinder head bolts (1 thru 8) in the sequence shown.
Discard the cylinder head bolts.

9. Remove the right cylinder head from the engine block.
10. Place the cylinder head on a flat, clean surface with the combustion chambers face-up in order to prevent damage to the deck face.

Important: DO NOT reuse the cylinder head gasket.

11. Remove the right cylinder head gasket.
12. Remove all remaining gasket material from the engine block using the J28410.
13. Inspect the cylinder head gasket mating surface on the engine block.
14. Clean and inspect the right cylinder head.
15. Disassemble the right cylinder head if necessary.




Installation Procedure







1. Assembly the right cylinder head if necessary.
2. Install the new right cylinder head gasket with OBEN/TOP imprint facing upward.

Important: Ensure all wires, components, etc. are out of the way when installing the cylinder head.

3. Position the cylinder head to the engine block.

4. Install the new cylinder head bolts.
Tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

5. Following the tightening sequence use the J 36660-A to rotate the cylinder head bolts as described in the following steps:
5.1. Rotate the cylinder head bolts 90 degrees.
5.2. Rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 90 degrees.
5.3. Rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 90 degrees.
5.4. Rotate the cylinder head bolts an additional 15 degrees.

6. Install the right exhaust manifold.







7. Install the 2 bolts securing the rear timing belt cover to the right cylinder head.
Tighten the rear timing belt cover bolts to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.).


8. Install the timing belt tensioner.
9. Install the right camshafts.
10. Install the water crossover.
11. Install the intake manifold flange.
12. Fill the cooling system.
