Seat Belt: Service and Repair

SEAT BELT REPLACEMENT - DRIVER OR PASSENGER

TOOLS REQUIRED
J 38778 Door Trim Pad Clip Remover

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

CAUTION: Refer to SIR Caution in Service Precaution.

NOTE:
To prevent possible seat belt damage, refer to the following items before servicing or replacing lap and shoulder belts, including single loop belt systems:
- Lap and shoulder belts will be serviced as follows:
- Replace only the part in question.
- Do not intermix standard and deluxe belts on front or rear seats.
- All attachment hardware must be replaced, not reused.
- Keep sharp edges and damaging objects away from belts.
- Avoid bending or damaging any portion of the belt buckle or latch plate.
- Do not bleach or dye belt or strap webbing. Clean with a mild soap solution and water.
- When installing lap or shoulder belt anchor bolts, start the bolts by hand to ensure that the bolts are threaded straight.
- Do not attempt repairs on lap or shoulder belt retractor mechanisms to lap belt retractor covers. Replace defective assemblies with new service replacement parts.
- Do not attempt to remove the seat belt retractor cover. The cover and the long rivet securing the cover to the retractor are not available as service replacement parts.




1. Disable the SIR. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 7 or SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 9 in Restraint Systems.
2. Remove the seat back trim panel.
3. Remove the seat belt post rear trim cover by performing the following:
- Remove the 2 seat back post trim cover screws.
- Use the J 38778 in order to remove the retainer from the center of the seat back post trim cover.
- Push up, and remove the seat belt post trim cover.




4. Remove the shoulder belt retractor nut (2) and pull outward on the shoulder belt retractor (1) in order to remove the retractor.




5. Remove lap belt retractor cover.




6. Drill the rivet (1) from the lap retractor cover bracket.

CAUTION: Eye protection must be worn when drilling rivets to reduce the chance of personal injury.




7. With the rivet removed (1) push downward on the bracket in order to remove the retractor assembly nut (2).
8. Remove the lap retractor nut (2) in order to remove the lap retractor assembly (3).

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE




1. Install the lap retractor assembly (3) over the stud (2).
2. Align the tab on the retractor with the notch in the seat frame.
3. Install the lap retractor nut.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

4. Install a new rivet in the lap retractor bracket.




5. Install the lap belt retractor cover.
6. Ensure the shoulder belt is not twisted prior to installation of the shoulder retractor.




7. Install the shoulder belt retractor (1).
8. Install the shoulder retractor nut (2).

Tighten
Tighten the nut (2) to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).




9. Install the seat belt post trim cover by performing the following:
- Hook the top of the seat belt post trim cover to the seat.
- Install the seat belt post trim cover retainer.
- Install the seat belt post rear trim cover screws.

Tighten
Tighten the screws to 2 N.m (18 lb in).

10. Install the seat back trim panel.
11. Enable the SIR. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 7 or SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 9 in Restraint Systems.
