7. Gears and Shafts Cleaning and Inspection
Gears and Shafts Cleaning and InspectionImportant: The cluster gear (1) is three separate components and is serviced as a complete assembly. It should not be dismantled. The assembly of the components is precise and cannot be duplicated.
1. Clean the gear in solvent.
2. Remove the caged needle roller bearing (2) from the main drive gear.
Important: When removing the two snap rings (1), secure the two caged needle roller bearings (2) to the idler shaft (4), take note of the orientation of each to the bearings.
3. Clean the reverse idler shaft in solvent.
4. Clean the mainshaft in solvent.
5. Inspect for the following:
^ Heat discoloration
^ Bearing surfaces
^ Straightness
Important: Chipped or worn gears must be replaced.
6. Clean and inspect all gears, sleeves, hubs, rings and shafts for wear, scoring, pitting, chips, nicks or burrs. Slight scores or burrs may be honed off with a fine stone.
