Radiator Cooling Fan: Service and Repair

Cooling Fan Replacement - Electric (LY7)

Removal Procedure

1. Caution: An electric fan under the hood can start up even when the engine is not running and can injure you. Keep hands, clothing and tools away from any underhood electric fan.

Caution: To help avoid personal injury or damage to the vehicle, a bent, cracked, or damaged fan blade or housing should always be replaced.

Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Drain the cooling system.





3. Disconnect the surge tank hose (3).
4. Remove the fan shroud to radiator bolt (1).
5. Remove the fan shroud to air plenum bolt (2).
6. Remove remaining fan shroud to radiator bolts.





7. Using J38185 disconnect the upper radiator hose at the radiator (1).
8. Remove the coolant bypass valve bolt.
9. Reposition the coolant bypass valve.
10. Release the coolant bypass solenoid from the fan shroud.
11. Remove the air cleaner assembly.





12. Remove the screw (1) from the A/C line retaining clip (3).
13. Rotate the retaining clip.





14. Remove the electric fan harness clip (1).
15. Disconnect the fan motor electrical connectors (2).
16. Separate the wiring harness from the fan shroud.
17. Using J38185 remove the coolant bypass hose (2) from the radiator.





18. Remove the right fan shroud bolt (3).
19. Remove the left fan shroud bolt.

20. Important: Carefully remove the electric cooling fan assembly from the vehicle, to protect the radiator core.

Pull upward on the fan assembly, removing the assembly from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

1. Important: Carefully install the electric cooling fan assembly into the vehicle, to protect the radiator core.

Install the cooling fan assembly to the vehicle.
2. Ensure that the electric cooling fan is in the lower attaching points.
3. Install the upper fan shroud to radiator mounting bolts.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Tighten the bolt to 6.5 Nm (58 inch lbs.).





4. Install the electric cooling fan shroud to plenum mounting bolt (2).
Tighten the bolt to 6.5 Nm (58 inch lbs.).
5. Connect the surge tank hose to radiator (3).





6. Connect the wiring harness electrical connectors to the cooling fan motors.





7. Connect the fan electrical harness retainers (1) to the fan assembly.
8. Attach the remaining wiring harness retaining clips to the fan shroud.





9. Install the A/C line retaining clip screw (1) to the fan shroud.
Tighten the screw to 1 Nm (9 inch lbs.).





10. Position the radiator hose with the mark facing up.
11. Position J38185 to the clamp (1) and position the clamp on the radiator hose.





12. Using J38185 install the coolant bypass hose (2) at the radiator.
13. Fill the cooling system.
14. Install the air cleaner assembly.
15. Connect the battery negative cable.
